    Description:
This is a 3 credit Colonial IU 20 Continuing Professional Education (CPE) graduate course. This course will focus on the different types of children’s literature that can be used to help children with their literacy development. Students need to learn how to become successful communicators. Children’s literature can be a powerful tool to teach students how to become effective readers, writers, listeners, and speakers. Additionally, this course will explain to participants how they can increase their student’s vocabulary development, fluency, and comprehension through the use of children’s literature. Participants will learn how to develop action plans that are directly related to the curriculum they teach. These action plans will be used to increase acquisition, retention, engagement and motivation in the classroom using children’s literature. Methods and strategies for implementing children’s literature in the classroom will be utilized. The instructor will present the material through group discussions, inquiry-based learning activities, cooperative learning activities, lectures, videos, and hands-on activities. Participants will be required to develop a research paper, create action plans, summarize current readings on children’s literature, and develop a portfolio.
