Colonial Intermediate Unit 20 provides auxiliary services thru Act 89 to almost 6,000 students in over 40 participating nonpublic schools. The services include remedial reading, remedial mathematics, instructional support, psychological support, guidance counseling, and funding for standardized testing. The Intermediate Unit also provides Title I remedial instruction on behalf of the resident school district to identified nonpublic school students on a contractual basis.
The program is state funded, based upon an aid ratio multiplied by the number of students enrolled in nonpublic schools. The program employs a director, program supervisor, 11 remedial reading and/or mathematics teachers, one of whom is also an Instructional Support team /educational technology consultant, five secondary guidance counselors, and three full-time psychologists. Remedial services in reading and math are provided to students at 21 elementary schools. The middle grades at two elementary buildings, one middle school and four high schools receive guidance services. Psychological services are delivered to all the aforementioned schools plus the remaining eligible schools on an as-needed basis. A major component of the elementary program is a collaborative team process called Instructional Support Team (IST). IST consists of all school personnel who instruct or work with a given student to meet the student’s needs. The team addresses academic, behavioral and emotional issues that prevent the student from being successful. All high school students in grades 9-12 receive services through the counseling and guidance program
