DESCRIPTION: Online 3 Credit Course
Educators will explore perceptions and expand their knowledge base of this disability category in order to meet these students' needs. The course takes an inside look into what it is like to live with autism. After analyzing the personal accounts presented, educators will explain how they will change or maintain their interactions with students and families of students with autism. The course instructs educators to evaluate IDEA, FAPE and least restrictive environment and appraise current practices as they relate to enabling students to participate fully. Upon reviewing special support services available to students with autism, participants will analyze the components of the IEP process for OT, PT and Speech, with an emphasis on developing measurable goals based on present levels, specially designed instruction, adaptations, accommodations, supplementary aids and services, and supports for school personnel. Educators will be presented with various therapies that exist for treating autism, and evaluate the alternatives families have to choose from when determining a treatment plan for their child with autism. Furnished with research based best practices to use in the classroom, the participant will create an optimal learning environment by utilizing, evaluating, modifying and adapting the classroom setting, curricula, teaching strategies, materials and equipment.
