Inspiring Awareness and Empowerment on White Cane Day

Observed annually on October 15, White Cane Day raises awareness about the experiences and accomplishments of individuals who are blind or visually impaired. This year, Colonial IU 20 Teacher of the Visually Impaired, Karissa Johnson, led an inspiring day of awareness and celebration at Easton Area Middle School and Shawnee Elementary School, in collaboration with the Easton Area School District.

The day featured demonstrations, interactive displays, and a visit from The Seeing Eye organization to share how guide dogs support individuals with visual impairments. One student helped create a school-produced documentary about blindness, while another wrote and performed an original song celebrating White Cane Day. Staff and students also proudly wore custom-designed t-shirts to mark the occasion.

Through these meaningful activities, students gained a deeper understanding of visual impairment and the importance of accessibility, inclusion, and independence. Thank you to Karissa Johnson and the Easton Area School District for making this celebration both educational and empowering.
